What Is a GPA Calculator?

A GPA calculator is a tool that calculates your grade point average using your course grades and credit hours. GPA stands for Grade Point Average and is commonly used by schools, colleges, and universities to summarize academic performance.

This free GPA calculator uses a standard 4.0 scale. Enter each course, select the letter grade you received, and enter the number of credit hours. The calculator then determines your total grade points and GPA.

How to Calculate GPA

To calculate GPA, multiply the grade points for each course by its credit hours. Add all the resulting quality points together and divide the total by the number of credit hours.

GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours

For example, suppose you have three courses:

  • Course 1: A with 3 credit hours
  • Course 2: B with 3 credit hours
  • Course 3: C with 3 credit hours

Using the 4.0 scale, the grade points are 4.0, 3.0, and 2.0. The quality points are therefore 12, 9, and 6.

27 ÷ 9 = 3.00 GPA

4.0 GPA Scale

A4.00
A−3.70
B+3.30
B3.00
B−2.70
C+2.30
C2.00
C−1.70
D+1.30
D1.00
F0.00

Grade point systems can vary between institutions. Some schools use different values for plus and minus grades, while others may use a different GPA scale. Always check your institution's official grading policy when an exact official GPA is required.

Semester GPA vs Cumulative GPA

A semester GPA represents your performance during one semester or academic term. A cumulative GPA combines your academic results across multiple semesters or terms.

This calculator can be used for either purpose by entering the relevant courses and credit hours.

Why Credit Hours Matter

Credit hours determine how much influence a course has on your GPA. A course worth four credit hours has more impact on a GPA than a course worth one credit hour.

That is why GPA is not normally calculated by simply averaging the grade points of all courses. Credit hours must be included in the calculation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is GPA?

GPA stands for Grade Point Average. It is a numerical representation of academic performance based on course grades and credit hours.

How do I calculate my GPA?

Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, add the quality points together, and divide by the total number of credit hours.

What is a 4.0 GPA scale?

A 4.0 scale is a commonly used GPA system where an A is generally worth 4.0 grade points and an F is worth 0.0. Individual institutions may use slightly different grade point values.

Can I calculate my semester GPA?

Yes. Enter the courses from the semester, select each letter grade, and enter the corresponding credit hours.

Can I calculate cumulative GPA?

Yes. You can enter courses from multiple semesters if you have the grades and credit hours for those courses. For an exact institutional cumulative GPA, use the grade point rules provided by your school.

Does an A always equal 4.0?

Not necessarily. Many institutions use A = 4.0, but grading systems can differ. This calculator uses the displayed 4.0 scale as its default.

Is this GPA calculator free?

Yes. You can calculate your GPA online without creating an account.
